4 - Warrior injuries in the infirmary

[10:02]  Zenith Sorbet: Today's class is on treating warrior injuries in the infirmary and our volunteer is Warrior.
[10:03]  Zenith Sorbet: Well I need you to sit on the exam table
[10:03]  Warrior nods and jump up
[10:03]  Zenith Sorbet: Have you all used the heal function on the meter?
[10:03]  Student #1: yes
[10:03]  Student #2: umm no i havent
[10:04]  Zenith Sorbet: I'd like you to try then while he is healthy.e.
[10:04]  Zenith Sorbet: move closer to him.
[10:04]  GLM Monitor: Teal Parx starts to tend to Uhuru Avro's wounds.
[10:05]  Zenith Sorbet: Now please do the diagnose function.
[10:05]  GLM Monitor: Student starts to diagnose Warrior's wounds.
[10:05]  GLM Monitor: Student finishes diagnosing Warrior's wounds
[10:05] Student #2: It says he is healthy and normal.
[10:06]  Zenith Sorbet: Now I will need to injure him and repeat it.
[10:06]  Zenith Sorbet: dagger or goad?
[10:06]  Warior: grins and closes his eyes
[10:06]  Uhuru Avro: daggers
[10:06]  Zenith Sorbet: puts her goad away with a sigh and takes out her dagger
[10:07]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 3 damage.  (97%)
[10:07]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 6 damage.  (91%)
[10:07]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 3 damage.  (88%)
[10:07]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 6 damage.  (82%)
[10:07]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 3 damage.  (79%)
[10:07]  Zenith Sorbet: All right this time heal him.
[10:07]  Student #2: should I diagnose first or just heal?
[10:07]  Zenith Sorbet: well try diagnose
[10:08]  GLM Monitor: Student #2 starts to diagnose warriors's wounds.
[10:08]  Zenith Sorbet: I find diagnose to be useless for this situation.
[10:08]  GLM Monitor: Student finishes diagnosing Warrior's wounds.
[10:08] Student #2: It says he's fine?
[10:08]  Zenith Sorbet: Also you can see he spontaneously heals as well.
[10:08]  Zenith Sorbet: The meter is slowly going back up.
[10:08]  GLM Monitor: Student #2 starts to tend to Warrior's wounds.
[10:08]  Zenith Sorbet: Even if we did nothing he would recover completely.
[10:08]  Student #2 heals him quickly before physicians are made redundant
[10:09]  Zenith Sorbet: Everyone wearing a meter can do first aid.
[10:09]  GLM Monitor: Student #2 finishes dressing Uhuru Avro's wounds.
[10:09]  Zenith Sorbet: If a scribe heals then typically the meter goes up about 4%
[10:09]  Warrior smiles
[10:09]  Zenith Sorbet: When physicians do it it gone up about 30% if you don't do the diagnose first.
[10:09]  Zenith Sorbet: Is he were badly injured you might need to do it three times or more to fix the meter, if you don't diagnose first.
[10:10]  Zenith Sorbet: Also if two of us do it together on the same warrior it goes up very fast if you just use the heal function.
[10:10]  Zenith Sorbet: Two hints: in battle situations with high lag the "heal" function will appear to not being working. It is working. It's only lag.
[10:10] The key thing is that there is kind of, well, I think of it as two scripts, one obvious, one hidden. Only the diagnose function reveals the hidden script. So you need to always do the diagnose first, then  heal. For reasons I don't understand the hidden script accumulates damage and affects the front script. If you do diagnose then heal, the heal is complete with one round and everything works beautifully.
[10:10]  Zenith Sorbet: Any questions?
[10:10]  Student #1: no thank you
[10:10]  Student #2 smiles, no that makes sense
[10:11]  Zenith Sorbet: All right now of course the meter part is only a very small part of warrior care
[10:11]  Zenith Sorbet: And some other meters such as the GM have no heal functon.
[10:12]  Zenith Sorbet: Often warriors have taken terrible hits in the battle field but by the time we see them in here the meter is restored even though they are gravely injured and need care.
[10:12]  Zenith Sorbet: Also their hidden script is damaged even if it shows as heathy on the surface. Here is where the diagnose function is useful. If his striking power is down and he heals slowly the hidden script is damaged so do a diagnose and then a heal even if his meter appears normal.
[10:12]  Zenith Sorbet: Usually the warriors come in with there sword brothers and they give you a full description of injuries. (Good time to get a weekly check up in if you have an apprentice standing about.)
[10:13]  Zenith Sorbet: I recommend washing your hands while you ask for a full descripton.
[10:13]  Zenith Sorbet: Let's see. This warrior here was just attacked by mad chief physician who stabbed him multiple times in the chest and arm.
[10:14]  Warrior chuckles
[10:14]  Zenith Sorbet: Have you both seen an unconscious warrior?
[10:14]  Student #1: yes
[10:14]  Student #2: looks to Warrior, sorry but no i havent
[10:15]  Warrior laughs
[10:15]  Zenith Sorbet: Oh well!
[10:15]  Warrior: you want me to stand?
[10:15]  Zenith Sorbet: Please
[10:15]  Zenith Sorbet: takes out her goad.
[10:15]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 10 damage.  (91%)
[10:15]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 10 damage.  (81%)
[10:15]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 8 damage.  (73%)
[10:15]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 9 damage.  (64%)
[10:15]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 10 damage.  (54%)
[10:15]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 9 damage.  (45%)
[10:15]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 8 damage.  (37%)
[10:15]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 10 damage.  (28%)
[10:15]  Zenith Sorbet: notice the color change as he is increaingly injured.
[10:15]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 7 damage.  (21%)
[10:15]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 9 damage.  (12%)
[10:15]  GLM Monitor: Zenith Sorbet hit Warrior hurting his body for 9 damage.  (4%)
[10:16]  GLM Monitor: Warrior has been bested by Zenith Sorbet
[10:16]  Zenith Sorbet: sheath's her goad.
[10:16]  Zenith Sorbet: That was fun, thank you Warrior.
[10:16]  Warrior trys a grin
[10:16]  Zenith Sorbet: Shall we heal him now ladies?
[10:17]  Zenith Sorbet: If you touch him while he's in this state you get a message.
[10:17]  Student #2 smiles and nods
[10:17]  GLM Monitor: Student #2 starts to shake Warrior, trying to aid them to their feet.
[10:17]  Zenith Sorbet: No you can start right away but you can't speed the time until he recovers consciousness.
[10:17]  Zenith Sorbet: he has to stay unconscious the full time the meter designates.
[10:17]  GLM Monitor: You start to shake Warrior, trying to aid them to their feet again.
[10:17]  GLM 1.2.2: You have stopped aiding Warrior
[10:17]  Student #2: is this aid doing anything?
[10:17]  GLM Monitor: You take out your medical kit and try to heal Warrior's wounds.
[10:17]  Student #2: or do we need to heal?
[10:17]  GLM Monitor: Student #2 finishes aiding Warrior up.
[10:17]  GLM Monitor: Warrior has recovered and can continue fighting.
[10:18]  Zenith Sorbet: Aid does a little about 8%.
[10:18]  Zenith Sorbet: Heal is much better.
[10:18]  GLM Monitor: Student #2 starts to tend to Warrior's wounds.
[10:18]  GLM Monitor: You finish dressing Warrior's wounds
[10:18]  Zenith Sorbet: Also it is legal for Free Women to carry slave goads and they work eaqually effectively on errant panthers and pirates and mercs.
[10:18]  GLM Monitor: Student #2 finishes dressing Warrior's wounds.
[10:18]  Student #1: and only Physicians can heal
[10:19]  Zenith Sorbet: Yes only physicans heal.
[10:19]  Student #1: how does the meter know
[10:19]  Zenith Sorbet: Well it is set to your caste on the server.
[10:19]  Warrior feels much better
[10:19]  Teal Parx: can i ask.... apprentices arent allowed to treat patients until a physician, but can we use the heal button?
[10:19]  Zenith Sorbet: Thank you Warrior how about sitting for us again.
[10:20]  Warrior nods
[10:20]  Zenith Sorbet: Yes you can use the heal button and within Olni, after you have taken this class and been observed you can do it for specific situations.
[10:20]  Teal Parx: but before that, it shouldnt be used
[10:20]  Zenith Sorbet: Also recall different meters work diferently and some like the Gorean meter have no heal.
[10:21]  Teal Parx nods
[10:21]  Zenith Sorbet: Well my feeling is if there is no physician around and someone is hurt and you know what to do, then do it.
[10:21]  Zenith Sorbet: First you try to get a full physician but you can't just leave someone to die and say "Sorry, but I'm not certified yet."
[10:22]  Zenith Sorbet: Now I should warn you that in some cities if you heal under any circumstances as a physician, you're thrown out of the caste.
[10:22]  Zenith Sorbet: Check local regulations.
[10:22]  Student #1: If my Ubar gives permission then is it alright in my City?
[10:22]  Zenith Sorbet: I would never throw an apprentice out for trying to help someone if no physician is available.
[10:22]  Zenith Sorbet: Your Chief physician, ubar city admin whatever
[10:23]  Zenith Sorbet: Any questions before I go on?
[10:23]  Student #2: no
[10:23]  Student#1: no thank you
[10:23]  Zenith Sorbet: Very good.
[10:24]  Zenith Sorbet: So we have poor warrior here who has been stabbed multiple times and shocked with the slave goad by the crazy chief physician.
[10:24]  Zenith Sorbet: First step is to find out all his injuries. Warriors have a bad habit of complaining about the scratch on their sword arm but not telling you about the arrow in their back.
[10:24]  Warrior smiles carefully
[10:25]  Zenith Sorbet: So if you don't ask for full information, you could be bandaging his sword arm while he bleeds to death on the floor.
􀀆
􀀅
[10:26]  Zenith Sorbet: So I get the full list on injuries.
[10:26]  Zenith Sorbet: Here is where you need to be a bit creative.
[10:26]  Zenith Sorbet: Wounds generally fall into two categories, those the pierce the skin and those that don't.
[10:27]  Zenith Sorbet: For those that don't pierce the skin you can't do much. So if he got pummeled by a guard after capture and his body is bruised...well you can't rp it much beyond noting it.
[10:28]  Zenith Sorbet: a deep slash or cut however requires treatment.
[10:28]  Zenith Sorbet: If you read you physicians apprentice manual you'll see there is a whole lot of stuff listed like marigold oil and blue short grass for cleaning wounds.
[10:29]  Zenith Sorbet: Also you see things like green paga for preventing infection.
[10:29]  Zenith Sorbet: really though if you read the books on the topic physicians never say things like "Disinfecting wound with marigold oil"
[10:29]  Zenith Sorbet: They generally use three steps.
[10:30]  Zenith Sorbet: 1) Cleanse 2) healing ointment 3) bandage and if the wound and deep and open, suture before ointment
[10:31]  Zenith Sorbet: in addition the books mention numbing salve.
[10:31]  Zenith Sorbet: So to be by the books that's really all you need. You can add more if you wish, but then you risk straying into on linisms.
[10:32]  Zenith Sorbet: Now Warrior, when a physician is treating you, do you care if she uses marigold oil or green paga to disinfect?
[10:32]  Warrior: nope
[10:32]  Zenith Sorbet: As physicians we are parachuting into other's role play.
[10:32]  Zenith Sorbet: We are not there to show off how much we know about all the herbal medicines in the manuals.
[10:33]  Zenith Sorbet: So I always try to keep it simple and easy.
[10:33]  Zenith Sorbet: I read the manuals carefully so I have knowledge to handle special situations. For example there are instructions for reinflating a collapsed lung in the manuals.
[10:34]  Zenith Sorbet: In all my warrior injuries I have seen a collapsed lung exactly once.
[10:34]  Zenith Sorbet: Does this make sense to you both?
􀀄
[10:35]  Student #2: I understood the Priest King's healing salve to be precious and rare and used sparingly but I seem to see it being used a lot. What do you think of its use?
[10:36]  Zenith Sorbet: I have not heard that it is precious and rare to be used sparingly before. That may correct. That may be an onlineism. I don't know. I use it all the time.
[10:36]  Student #2: so it is alright to use all the time
[10:36]  Zenith Sorbet: In my opinion yes because it is used so often in the books.
[10:36]  Student #2: I saw someone drag bosk gut suture thread through it to make the wound heal quicker
[10:37]  Zenith Sorbet: I have never heard of this. It may be true but I have never heard of it.
[10:37]  Student #2: if it was used during a battle to allow the Warriors to get back in the game quicker is there a chance that someone on the opposing side would object?
[10:38]  Zenith Sorbet: All kinds of onlineisms have crept into the practice of Gorean medicine in SL. If I had a book quote I would accept it. Otherwise, I would not.
[10:39]  Zenith Sorbet: If someone used something like that in role play to increase their odds of winning a battle in role play I would ask for a book quote and if it was not provided I would request a moderator. However we are here strictly by the books. It may be acceptable to do this in other sims.
[10:39]  Zenith Sorbet: Creativity is not a bad thing. I am only concerned about when someone makes up an onlineism like blue short grass or green paga and then fails an apprentice for not using it. To me that's wrong.
[10:41]  Zenith Sorbet: My ex companion was the High Scribe and he is in rl a radiologist.􀀃
[10:43]  Zenith Sorbet: That card I just gave you is a compilation he did.
[10:43]  Zenith Sorbet: Anyway Jarvis went through over 600 cards on everything he could find from multiple libraries all over Gor. He checked each and every reference.
[10:44]  Zenith Sorbet: He then came up with this card which outlines ALL the physician's knowledge actually in the books.
[10:44]  Zenith Sorbet: That notecard covers everything. Everything else is either additions people have made to fill in blanks or on lineisms.
[10:45]  Zenith Sorbet: I was astonished to see how little there actually is!
[10:45]  Zenith Sorbet: And yes it took him most of his work time in the summer.
[10:46]  Zenith Sorbet: Now we need some additions yes, but we certainly don't need people to be memorizing lists of herbs.
[10:46]  Zenith Sorbet: chuckles or studying for three real life years to be allowed to practice in SL Gor.
[10:48]  Zenith Sorbet: smiles - So I check Warrior completely, determine what his worst wounds are.
[10:49]  Zenith Sorbet: If he had an arrow wound I would check if the arrow was notched or not.
[10:49]  Zenith Sorbet: If notched you push it through, if not, you pull it out.
[10:49]  Zenith Sorbet: Then I usually rp something like this.
[10:50]  Zenith Sorbet: Carefully selects a proper thickness and length of suture.
[10:50]  Zenith Sorbet: applies numbing salve to the injury
[10:50]  Zenith Sorbet: begins stitching the wound closed from the bottom up
[10:50]  Zenith Sorbet: stitches until the edges of the wound are closed and neat applying healing salve as she works upward.
[10:51]  Zenith Sorbet: knots the sutures after the final stitch and clips it off.
[10:51]  Zenith Sorbet: applies more healing salve, begins bandaging
[10:51]  Zenith Sorbet: At this point you hand the warrior an appropriate bandage.
[10:51]  Zenith Sorbet: Many of the long time warriors already have a full collection.
[9:53]  Zenith Sorbet: Some bandages are clothing and it will remove what they wear.
[9:54]  Zenith Sorbet: Some warrior like running around with a bare chest except for the bandage. Some do not.
[9:54]  Zenith Sorbet: So prim bandages are handy for the modest.
[9:54]  Zenith Sorbet: Old time warriors use the ones they like, new warriors it might be worth an OOC IM to ask them.
[10:52]  Zenith Sorbet: I do this with each of the listed injuries stitching as needed.
[10:52]  Zenith Sorbet: I also add in items like
[10:53]  Zenith Sorbet: has a rep cloth on in one hand while gripping the arrow shaft with the other, grips yanks hard, tosses the arrow on the floor while applying direct pressure to the wound as fresh blood gushes.
[10:53]  Zenith Sorbet: This is where having the background reading from the manuals comes in handy.
[10:53]  Zenith Sorbet: You can improvise and add and be creative.
[10:54]  Zenith Sorbet: If the warrior has had many injuries or a lot of brusing I will give them some serum.
[10:54]  Zenith Sorbet: It tastes awful so I usually send a new warrior a IM message saying "This stuff taste like crap"
[10:54]  Warrior laughs
[10:55]  Zenith Sorbet: They will take the medicine and then role play how disgusting it is.
[10:55]  Student #1 laughs, crap being a technical term
[10:55]  Student #2: lol
[10:55]  Zenith Sorbet: Yes. I usually recommend paga ale as a restorative then send the warriors on their way.
[10:55]  Zenith Sorbet: I frequently prescribe one to three days of rest.
[10:56]  Zenith Sorbet: I also tell them to get a nice girl to keep them company.
[10:56]  Zenith Sorbet: That is in the books, girls comforting the injured. I personally think men heal better with a nice girl. No warrior yet has complained to me about telling them this.
[10:57]  Zenith Sorbet: If they have a captain waiting with them I will give the captain the same instruction.
[10:57]  Zenith Sorbet: I will also say you can do target practice but no sparring.
[10:57]  STudent #2: and the stitches heal in two or three days?
[10:57]  Zenith Sorbet: Again it is common sense.
[10:58]  Zenith Sorbet: I use dissolvable stiches. Some physicians use the kind you have to remove. In that case you tell the warrior to come back.
[10:58]  Zenith Sorbet: I prescribe nothing for pain relief except herbal teas and numbing salve.
[10:59]  Zenith Sorbet: The use of kanda for pain is an on lineism without basis in the books and from what IS in the books, no physician would recommend it. It is highly addictive.
[10:59]  Zenith Sorbet: Other last point, slave girls and observers often are there and get very upset about their injured master.
[11:00]  Zenith Sorbet: I try to include them by sending them to fetch clean rep clothes, things like that.
[11:00]  Zenith Sorbet: I also have an accessorgor healer's slave tray.
[11:00]  Zenith Sorbet: If they wear it you can rp them in as assisting.
[11:00]  Zenith Sorbet: Like this.
[11:01]  Zenith Sorbet: It is transfer so you can pass it to them to use during the healing sesson.
[11:01]  Zenith Sorbet: If you go buy one just make sure you get it back before you leave. many healing kajirae have one already.
[11:02]  Zenith Sorbet: But slaves find it very comforting to be serving the physician healing their master.
[11:02]  Zenith Sorbet: Accesorgor. We have been at this for one hour
[11:02]  Zenith Sorbet: So I would like to finish up. First I'll thank Warrior for so kindly volunteering to help.
[11:03]  Zenith Sorbet: And then I will ask if there are any further questions.
[11:04]  Zenith Sorbet: Next week we will do battlefield medicine.
